Annealing

Fiber sub-surface color

Annealing marks metal by heating the surface until oxide layers form — a smooth black or colored mark with no engraved depth. Done right, it will not catch a fingernail.

It is the food-safe-friendly finish for knives and the mechanism behind MOPA color marking on stainless and titanium.
