Optical wattage is the power that actually leaves the lens — the number that matters. Marketing wattage is often electrical draw or a diode-count multiplication.
A "40W" listing with 5W optical output cuts like the 5W machine it is. Reviews on this site score by verified optical output, and our machine classes are named by it.
