Focal length
Lens-to-material sweet spot
Focal length is the distance at which the lens converges the beam to its smallest spot. Short focal lengths give finer detail but a shallower forgiving zone; longer ones cut thick stock straighter.
Every machine ships with a spacer, ruler, or autofocus that sets this distance. If your cuts suddenly widen and char, focus drift is suspect number one.
