| Spec | Diode class | CO2 class |
|---|---|---|
| Materials | Wood, leather, dark acrylic, coated metal | All organics + clear acrylic + glass |
| Cutting style | Multi-pass on 3–6mm stock | Single-pass production cutting |
| Footprint & entry cost | Desktop-corner small, lowest entry price | Furniture-sized, higher entry |
| Consumables | Diode module (8–15k hrs) | Tube replacement (1.5–4.5k hrs) + mirrors |
| Maintenance | No mirror alignment | Three-mirror alignment, water cooling |
| Seller fit | Coasters, signs, leather, tumblers | Acrylic goods, volume cutting, edges that sell |
Specs standardized from published manufacturer data and consistent owner reports — we don’t operate a lab.
The classes divide on wavelength, not quality. A 455nm diode cannot cut clear acrylic or touch glass no matter the wattage; a CO2 does both and cuts everything else in one pass instead of four. What the diode buys back is entry price, footprint, and near-zero optical maintenance.
Choose by catalog: wood-and-leather product lines run beautifully — and profitably — on a 20–40W diode. The day your bestseller is acrylic, or your queue outgrows multi-pass cutting, is the day the CO2 class stops being optional. Run the payback-in-orders math before the sticker math.
